Trance, a concept rooted in psychology, denotes a distinct altered state of consciousness where individuals transiently lose self-awareness, grappling with diminished control over their thoughts and actions. Reflecting humanity's enduring quest for transcendence and spiritual connection, trance states persist through epochs and cultures.

Across diverse ancient cultures, serene and mystical trance states emerge through practices like hypnosis, meditation, chanting, and dance. Utilizing tools such as drumming and ritualistic sounds, like the wooden fish, guides individuals into trance, facilitating spiritual exploration and novel insights.

Historically, communal trance rituals preceding battles illustrate this phenomenon, wherein collective dancing and chanting induced a state of diminished pain sensitivity and unwavering obedience to leaders.

Within Daoism, trance signifies internal cultivation, where the yang spirit disengages from the body to surpass physical limitations and mortality. Cultivating this state enables the yang spirit to traverse the "heavenly gate," achieving an out-of-body experience.

Shamanism employs trance and spirit possession as conduits for shamans to commune with deities. Trance involves the shaman's soul departing the body to engage with supernatural spirits, whereas possession entails deities descending to inhabit the shaman's body, conveying messages and conducting ritualistic practices.

In the contemporary artistic realm, artists like Chen Li explore fluid aesthetics and contradictions through mineral pigments, modern lacquer art, and ceramics. Focusing on contemporary female narratives, Eastern mystical aesthetics, and the irrational dimensions of modern social life amidst ongoing modernization, Chen delves into conflicts between modernity and mysticism, elite culture and superstition. Her work reflects a nuanced state akin to androgyny and chaotic aesthetics born from the interplay of reason and intuition.

Xue Fei's artistic endeavors center on dreams, mythical elements, mysterious creatures, and human existence, crafting fantastical realms through surreal techniques. Utilizing organic materials like stones, discarded tiles, and sand as unique painting tools, Xue infuses everyday scenes with fairy tales, strange narratives, and personal growth memories, conveying a contemporary vision of an enigmatic world rooted in subconscious and visual exploration.

87.6

Hu Zhouhua forges distinctive narrative spaces through wooden board carvings, employing repetitive printing to explore the unknown. Characterized by a creative syntax of conflict and surrealism, her emotive use of color transcends material reality, abstractly representing the spiritual essence of transcendent states. Discarding social attributes such as race, gender, and political affiliations, Hu focuses on profound internal conflicts within conceptual frameworks.

In this exhibition, female artists draw inspiration from folklore, religious beliefs, personal introspection, and technology to reimagine the unknown through artistic creation and representation. Through their visual languages, they seek to reinterpret reality and speculative realms, guiding viewers into mysterious dimensions that underscore the mystique and potency of existing realities within their works.

While skepticism may shadow beliefs in magic or any definitive truths, amidst the fog of contemporary crises, questioning whether the illusions before our eyes or our genuine lives hold greater appeal invites introspection into our perceptions of reality and art's role in shaping them.

Xue Fei (b. 1993, Chongqing, China) graduated from Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts with a BA in 2015. Currently, she lives and works in Kunshan. Xue Fei’s work revolves around dreams, mythological elements, mysterious monsters and human life, creating a fantastical and grotesque world with a surrealist approach. Dramatically transforming rocks, discarded tiles, sand and other organic or artificial materials into painting tools and offering them a unique texture, Xue’s comprehensive narratives alter between fairy tales, ghost stories and memories. She creates various forms of life and scenes in her paintings with a touch of mundanity, which imparts a contemporary Strange-Tale worldview rooted in subconscious and visual. Xue Fei was an artist in residence of Swatch Art Peace Hotel in 2021.Xue Fei was invited to participate SWATCH FACES 2022 at the 59th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia "The Milk of Dreams".

Zhouhua Hu graduated from the Printmaking Department of Tama Art University in Japan. During her undergraduate studies, she developed a personal creative syntax characterised by a strong sense of conflict and unreality, which expresses strong emotions in colour and is not confined to reproducing the material reality. Instead, she employs abstract forms to express the spirituality of the transcendental state of human beings. Hu eschews all socially significant attributes of his subjects, including race, gender, political orientation, class, antagonisms, and the myth of identity politics. Instead, she focuses on the rich and subtle inner conflicts that underlie his concepts. The artist's current style can be seen as a continuation of the research she undertook as a student. The majority of his recent works are created using spray paint, with strong colours and geometrical elements employed to break through the physical form of photographs or common industrial products. This is achieved through the process of "covering" and "masking". By re-coding the energetic meanings of the carrier medium and decoupling the spiritual and material aspects of the artwork, the artist expresses his reverie on the boundary between self-consciousness and reality.
