A Sedimentation of Mind
In 1968, in an article titled ‘A sedimentation of mind’ published in Artforum, American earth artist Robert Smithson explored the connection between the mind and the earth in an almost meditative reflection. Smithson argued that the human mind, like the earth, has a way of disintegrating itself into the realm of art, and that the two are often transposed and echoed. The human memory of the earth wears away in a slow and relentless progression, the mind and the earth in a constant state of erosion, disintegrating into fragments before settling, crystallising and coalescing into an elemental layer of sediment that disintegrates, breaks up and is lost.

Land Art
Since the 1960s, Alan Sonfist has been a leading pioneer of land art, ecological art and environmental art. Sonfist's artistic process has always focused on coexistence with the environment, emphasising the fragility of nature and maintaining the idea that art can contribute to ‘our understanding and awareness of the environment’. In his creations, he insists on using materials from the natural environment, and the natural aesthetics he creates prioritises the preservation of natural harmony with minimal artificiality.

The exhibition 'The Echo of Land' presents 18 drawings and a photographic collage of a New York City forest by artist Alan Sonfist - highlighting his practice over the past 50 years and inviting viewers to broaden their understanding of environmental art. Sonfist specialises in poetically questioning the fragmentation of nature in contemporary society, highlighting the role of ecology in human consciousness and behaviour, and the fragility of complex ecologies. The earth speaks to us with strength, bond and interaction, invisibly as if making a contract with us. In the echoes of the dialogue, the artist uses contemporary art as a medium to rethink the symbiotic relationship between human beings and the living creatures of the earth.
