In modernist literary and philosophical theories, epiphany is a sudden revelation of reality in all its full and unique essence, “an explosion out of darkness, a kind of mystical experience when a part of the veil shrouding the mystery of the world is suddenly drawn aside so that the true nature of things seemed revealed” (James Joyce). This multi-layered experience involves both our senses and our mind, and it can be triggered by incongruously trivial events, objects or words. Coming from the Greek term epipháneia, which means manifestation, the word epiphany was then adopted by the Irish modernist writer James Joyce at the beginning of the 20th century to describe the artistic revelation of the inner radiance of an object or event. The notion of epiphany has since then inspired many contemporary works of art which are not expressions of aesthetic beauty per se, but rather expressions of authentic revelations, thus displaying epiphanic qualities.

The notion of epiphany, adopted by contemporary artists and interpreted through a wide range of languages and practices, enables us to capture the essence and the meaning of our subjective reality, not through careful observation and rational logic, but through intuition and magical thinking. For the show A Sprout of Magic, Parkview Green Art invites the artists who reinterpret in a unique and personal way the notion of epiphany as a form of revelation. These revelations are always personal and unique in the way they are represented and in the way they are experienced by the viewers, as they are deeply rooted in the irreplicable uniqueness of our sensitivity and existential experience. Different in terms of styles, languages, mediums, materials and backgrounds, in the displayed works we can grasp small details, narrative fragments, familiar images, mysterious objects, obscure symbols that can activate sudden revelations about the essence of life, love, time, space.

The works of the participating artists highlight the magic aura within different iconographies, patterns, visual elements, images, colors and forms, redefining the borders of reality and embracing the fantastical in the natural world, while still taking the real-life experience as starting point. Their works, expressions of an incredibly poetic imagination and a vivid aesthetic sensitivity, position themselves at the junction of various visual traditions spanning realism, symbolism, surrealism, existentialism and neo-pop. A Sprout of Magic pulls the viewer into a marvel world, where each visual detail and fragment can reconnect us to childhood memories, life experiences, inner feelings, mental associations and imaginary connections, thus providing us with the opportunity to experience authentic revelations about reality within the magical realm.
The exhibition runs through February 23, 2025.
