Double Double Gallery is pleased to announce the exhibition “Garden of Thistles, Dream of a Borzoi,” from April 3 to May 4, 2025, featuring the latest paintings by Italian artist Riccardo Albiero.
Riccardo Albiero tries to create an alternative “reality” in his work, a spiritual abode that he constructs within his inner world. Modest in size, his paintings are like windows that invite the viewer to come closer for a glimpse, or like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle scattered in the gallery, awaiting to be pieced together.

Having lived in Chioggia, a seaside town south of Venice, since his birth, Riccardo studied painting at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Bologna, one of the oldest and most prestigious art schools in Italy. Growing up immersed in the rich artistic traditions of his home region, the artist is particularly drawn to late medieval art and Giorgio de Chirico’s Metaphysical Painting which influenced his work in subtle ways: his mastery of egg tempera, detailed depictions, oneiric scenes, and symbolic imagery.
Riccardo’s paintings can be seen as a fable, a dreamscape. Behind the images reside his heart, his nuanced emotions and hidden desires - ineffable and inexplicable - expressed through symbols and metaphors. His work represents a constant quest, a probe into his inner “truth,” as well as a search for another “reality” that transcends everyday life and the physical world. It is an adventure and a return, a spiritual odyssey.
Sighthounds and thistles are central characters in his work. In the Western tradition of religious paintings, greyhounds are often depicted as loyal companions accompanying saints, while thistles symbolize the Crown of Thorns placed upon Jesus Christ’s head at his crucifixion-both conveying piety and devotion to faith. They appear in Riccardo’s paintings with an aura of their past, and are imbued with new meanings - something private and intimate, yet hard to discern: a sighthound searching for something in a deserted room, a prickly thistle blossoming in the dark night of a garden corner, an eye encircled by burning flames, a dangling star…Through the artist’s delicate brushstrokes, deliberate compositions, and subdued tones of tempera paint, the ordinary is immersed in a dreamy atmosphere, mysterious and uncanny, lingering in the viewer’s mind.
