"I am a camera with its shutter open" is the first line of the iconic bookBerlin Stories by novelist Christopher Isherwood. Taking the opening of Berlin Stories as the title, the Berlin-based gallery Hua International for the first time gathers young artists working in Berlin at its Beijing branch. The exhibition is inspired by the imaginary history and contemporary vitality of the city of Berlin, particularly its underground culture. As it keeps open the camera shutter, it never ceases to capture artistic moments that connect two distant cities.
In conjunction with the artworks, the exhibition space mimics Isherwood's portrayal of Berlin's nightlife—a realm where the boundaries between past and present blur, and ghosts of bygone eras intermingle with contemporary experiences. The intricacies of identity, memory, and societal norms all emerge against the backdrop of a city in flux.

Nicholas Grafia stages interventions into the historical archive, weaving research, popular culture, as well as personal and art histories into his bright visual works, addressing themes of racial and sexual vulnerability by examining who is in- and excluded from the narratives that make up the archive. Working across disciplines, Grafia’s practice in performance and painting juxtaposes queer iconography with the historical – developing a visual style of rounded and elongated shapes, a distinctively camp color palette made up of fuchsia and pastels, that is referential to absurdism and which draws from close readings of post-colonial theory.

她曾在Bielefeld艺术协会、MEP(巴黎)、The Film Gallery(巴黎)、Scheusal(柏林)、MOM Artspace(汉堡,2019年)、Falckenberg收藏(哈尔堡,2017年)、汉堡艺术馆(2016年)、DOC!(巴黎,2019年)和La Traverse(马赛,2022年)等地举办展览。
Rosa Joly lives and works between places and in a wide variety of crafts. After graduating in literature and humanities she went on studying Fine Arts in Lyon and in Hamburg. She cultivates the art of diversion and fearlessly bends the techniques and the tools she borrows from classical sculpture processes and traditional craftsmanship. In the manner of an alchemist, experimenting with a wide range of materials and objects in a quest often doomed to fail, she engages in perilous processes and likes to provoke unexpected outcomes. She has exhibited at the Kunstverein Bielefeld, the MEP (Paris), The Film Gallery (Paris), Scheusal (Berlin) MOM Artspace, Hamburg (2019), the Falckenberg Collection, Harburg (2017), Kunsthaus Hamburg (2016), DOC!, Paris (2019) and La Traverse, Marseille (2022). Rosa Joly was a resident of contemporary art centre, Triangle-Astérides, in Marseille in 2021, the year she participated in the creation of Scheusal, an exhibition space in Berlin.
